My Preciazz.... Page 4 - hardware
I left the body to harden off for around ten days, then picked up any rough spots and tidied them up as best I could. Now the fun bit - the hardware!
I was lucky to pick up a P/J set of Seymour Duncan Hot pickups on eBay for a good price -
the only downside to them is that the J pickup is single coil so may hum abit (they do a stacked coil version too).
Bridge is a nickel finish Badass II, knobs are Jazz style.
I had lined the cavity with some aluminium tape I had, but decided to redo the job with copper tape.
Got a good connection right through the body cavity. I also lined the underside of the pickguard,
and brought up a small strip of tape from the cavity up to a screwhole, so that the pickguard tape was connected.
Wiring was vintage style cloth covered stuff. Sprague cap on the tone control - all these bits (plus bridge, neck plate and strap buttons)
from Bass Parts Resource
And here it is with bridge, pickups and jacks fitted. Tested things out by tapping the pickups with a screwdriver when plugged in at low volume -
discovered a short on the J pickup (the hot wire was shorting to the shielding). Now fixed. Good sign was that I didn't hear any hum - plenty of time for that to manifest itself!
Still need some small screws to fix the jack plates -
need round heads though, as the screw holes in the plates aren't countersunk. Time for a trip to the local hardware emporium.
One trip to several local hardware emporia later, I'm fed up - no small roundheads in anything but brass or black japanned.
Fortunately Google found me www.stainlessparts.co.uk, and we're away again.
In theory the two switches will give me series/parallel on the P pickup and then the same between J and P. We'll see.
As there are two jacks, I've set the second jack to take a signal straight from the P pickups,
bypassing volume and tone controls - it'll be interesting to see how it sounds.
And here it is all in one piece!
Think the wiring's a bit iffy, so the scratchplate'll have to come off and I'll simplify things. Watch this space!
